Chapter Thirteen
Four long miserable days. That’s how long it had been since Samantha had heard from Jane. She pulled her blanket up to her chin and shifted in bed so she could see out her window and gaze up at the bright stars and gibbous moon. The evening was crisp, but she’d left her window mostly open so she could hear the sea and let its rhythmic lullaby soothe her to sleep.
She missed Oliver, and she closed her fist at the urge to stroke her fingers through his silky fur. Sully had assured her, as per the Irish folklore that his family believed in without question, that the cat-killer would now be subjected to no less than nineteen years of well-deserved bad luck. To Samantha, that wasn’t nearly enough.
“Poor cat.” The words were raspy and low, and she could hear the sorrow in her own voice.
She was close to tears but told herself it wasn’t from sadness but exhaustion. She’d had four nights of impossibly restless sleep and fitful dreams that were nothing but fragments of scenes and anxious feelings. And to top it off, today had been a twelve-hour workday that included her guiding two overcrowded evening walking tours, a rarity on weekdays even in the busy summertime.
Both times she’d stopped out in front of the Hutchens’s large home, her heart had stuttered, and she’d nearly lost the thread of her story mid-sentence. She cared about today’s Jane Hutchens. Not someone long dead. Samantha’s desire to see her Jane had already transcended mere want and had transitioned into a visceral need that was nearly embarrassing.
She’d called Jane and texted, but all she’d gotten was an automated message stating that number was no longer in service. That, she decided, was actually a very good thing. But why hadn’t Jane reached out to her in some way with her new number? Samantha felt the sting of rejection down to her bones.
There was something between them. She felt it too strongly to pretend it didn’t exist. And she’d thought Jane had felt it too. But now she wasn’t so sure. Had she unknowingly done something to upset Jane? She’d encouraged, no, she had demanded that Jane tell her parents about the stalker, even when it was clear Jane hated the idea. Had she pushed Jane too far?
A tension headache bloomed, but it wasn’t enough to keep hazel eyes from drooping, and the stars began to blur. Tomorrow was her day off, and she resolved to find Jane and get the answers she so desperately sought. And then she would…She would…Before she could make further plans, Samantha drifted into a deep sleep.
A chubby toddler with dark, curly hair stood crying on the beach as the tide rushed in. Birds swarmed all around the little boy, and tears glistened on rosy cheeks that glowed in the warm light of the rising sun.
A nearby dog barked.
The boy’s beseeching eyes lifted to meet hers and shock tore through her as mutual recognition flared. No longer merely an observer in the dream, Samantha’s heart leapt into her throat.
